Today, I visited the Rockwall County Library’s homeschooling families. We discussed the definition of Citizen Science (research data that the average citizen can record for a research project). We also discussed our native rough earth snakes and how their observations can help a research project.
Rough Earth Snakes are found in the southeastern US. They are dark gray backs and cream colored bellies. Adult males reach 7-9 inches in length, females 10-12 inches. They have live births. Generally found hiding under plants, rocks, and decorations in gardens where they can hunt worms. After heavy rains they may find their way inside houses when their burrows flood. A trash can on its side and a gentle guide with a broom is the safest way to get them back outside.
Enjoy a photo of a rough earth snake, plus papers that two young friends left at the event.
